[qd-4255] Araknidus & aLJar3d - Disturbanz

Araknidus + aLJar3d - Disturbanz (qd-4255) album cover

Araknidus + aLJar3d - Disturbanz (qd-4255) album cover

Artists: Araknidus & aLJar3d | Release: Disturbanz (qd-4255)

Two drum&bass masters team up to dish out an aggressive laser volley of tracks that proclaim the supremacy of two-step and jungle — even in 2009. Araknidus and aLJar3d both litter their music with speech samples and distorted synthlines, with tough beats and a love of sci-fi. Welcome to dystopia, enemy aliens, evil warlords, and mutant clones.

Araknidus is the dubstep artist alias for Mike Madriaga (aka Evo Evolver) whose releases are on QED Records. Meanwhile, aLJar3d is a Bacolod City-based musician who has been travelling the Philippines bringing his DNB music everywhere.

Keywords: dubstep, 2-step, drum&bass, dnb, sci-fi
Notes: 8 MP3s encoded at 128 to 192 kbps (VBR) 44.1kHz stereo.

QED Records Interviews: Emorej

Email interview with Emorej. September 6, 2008.

In his secret identity, Emorej wears business attire and goes to an office from 9 to 5, for a company that sells scales and panels for construction. When the day is over however, he retreats to his den and fires up the software that has turned this mild-mannered businessman into an aggressive, one-person, tune-making and marketing machine.  He started making music in 2001 using a program called ACID PRO and entering remix contests on the AcidPlanet community of Acid Pro users. Today, he still cannot play any instrument in the traditional sense, opting instead to craft songs using samples, virtual instruments, and his computer. This is one artist who refuses to play live. Just because it’s not his cup of tea.

Emorej is too shy for the camera.
Instead of his photo, here is his keyboard, the Creative Prodikeys.

Your last release on QED was the Potpourri album and your contribution to Acid42’s Nykto EP, what have you been up to since then?
I’m still making music. And uploading it to my pages on Amiestreet or Soundclick.

In what directions are your current tracks going?
As with before, it still goes in all directions. Whatever sounds nice. Although currently I’m doing more electronic pop than usual.

You are one of the most prolific producers in the scene, releasing a track a week almost, and announcing it immediately to the Electronica Manila mailing list. What keeps you going?
Red bull. Energizer batteries?

And how do you do it?
I work with loops. The hardest part in song making is the lyrics, those vocal tracks. The backing instrumentals rarely are problematic except when doing instrumental solo parts.

Is there a specific work method or formula that you use to keep creating tracks so consistently?
I just write down ideas immediately, and go back when I have more ideas.

Do you wait for inspiration?
Rarely. Because most of my songs are built on others’ inspiration since I use a lot of samples. I just improve on those ideas and finish them.

What new gear / software are you having fun using in the studio?
Not much gear. It’s all software except for my Creative ProdiKeys. I also enjoy using plugins and software by Hypersonic, Izotope, and Waves.

So why do you make music?
Because I can! :D Before all the software, I wasn’t able to do that. But now I can. Thank God for computers!

Finally, excluding your own solo albums, what’s your favorite QED release so far and why?
Morse. Cool music. ‘Nuff said!

QED Records interviews: Demolee

Email interview with Demolee. September 10, 2008.

Where do you find the next generation of downtempo music producers in the Philippines? In I.T. companies apparently. One of them just happens to be Franco Madrid, also known as Demolee, a product specialist who sweats and breathes chillout music.  Though he won’t tell us what product he masters, we do know that in his free time, he’s mastering tracks for his solo project Demolee and his live group Flavours and Caffeine (FNC). The best part is, even before he learned how to make electronic music, he was already downloading from QED Records. Which is a nice way of showing that web 2.0 is making producers out of all consumers — though not all of us are as talented as this guy.
